Slashers In the Night [28 Aug 2003|11:13pm]
[ mood | devious ]

Went to watch LXG again today. And also Down With Love.

I'msosorrybutIseeslashinDownWithLove.IthoughtI'dseeitbeforethemovieandnowIdoIdoIdo.

It has lots of Shirtless! Ewan, so all's good.

Um. Spoilers. And slashiness. )

Went to watch LXG again with slasher friends. I and another friend ship the same LXG pairing, and we were, for the lack of a better word, both high when the slash materialized.

We also wrote a round robin LXG veering-dangerously-close-to- Fine, it was smut scene in the train on the way home. Thank heavens the passenger next to me was asleep.

All Qui/Obi fans who do watch LXG - Tell me what you think. When you catch it.

I think I should be Disturbed. Too busy laughing. [26 Aug 2003|01:24am]
[ mood | ecstatic ]

Came home today, and my sibling, for the lack of a better word, was all... enthused. And then he told me what happened in his class today. They're studying Romeo and Juliet. And then some of them decided to go off on a "Romeo and Julian" sidetrack. It sounded like "Romeo and Julien" first I heard of it, which startled me. My sibling went on to gleefully describe the balcony scene. Am not quite sure what to think when the main problem my brother's classmates portrayed Romeo as having with his new Other Half was Julian's appearance. They didn't think of gender at all.

[info]clara_swift? I'm beginning to have serious misgivings on whether or not slash is contagious.

What you will see below happened as a result of [info]clara_swift, her wonderful daughter, and my visiting a bead shop. Regretfully, I couldn't resist it.

Wandering Minds. [22 Aug 2003|12:48am]
[ mood | busy ]

This is what happens when I attempt to do a Law Reading which begins as such:

“It is by an American scholar, Felix Cohen, and consists of a Socratic dialogue on property which is based on notes from his seminars and class discussions at Yale Law school in the 1940s and 1950s. The introduction must be read against the backdrop of the old world order and the hysteria that culminated in McCarthyism.”

I shall now write a Socratic dialogue between My Mind and My Work, heretofore referred to, respectively, as [info]errantheart and Law Reading.

Law Reading: “Much of what he says will probably surprise you.”

[info]errantheart: “You don’t say.”

Law Reading: “Before you read the piece, write down your own definition of property.”

[info]errantheart: “This is where I feel stupid.”

Law Reading: “It need be neither articulate nor accurate, for no-one else is going to see it.”

[info]errantheart: “Why do I somehow not believe that?”

Law Reading: “Property is [followed by four lines, where, ideally, the definition of property will be dutifully written down.]”

[info]errantheart: “Then after I do this, I will read the article and feel exceedingly silly.”

*looks at paper*

Law Reading: “Property is . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .”

[info]errantheart: “I feel like writing a new definition of property. But I am also having Very Wrong Thoughts.”

It is very interesting that my first brush with Law As I Will Be Made To Study It has prompted me to write slash.

Well, thank you, Felix Cohen.

But it’s not *really* slash. )

So Many Movies. So Little Time. [20 Aug 2003|04:23am]
[ mood | happy ]

I was watching a movie with a friend recently, and wondering if I would ever get to see the Down With Love advertisement in a movie theatre. And who should come on but Ewan McGregor announcing his identity.

I think I frightened her.

So I got my movie ad! *thrilled*

Spoilers For the... Advertisement. )

Watched my Jedi Mind Trick movie again ; ) Also known as How To Deal. Am quite sure this is not how I was supposed to remember it. But that’s the way I do remember it, simply because:

Spoilers For How to Deal )

I love Skye Sweetnam’s “Billy S.” song from that movie. In tone, it’s very close to “10 Things I Hate About You” ‘s Letters to Cleo, who did “I Want You To Want Me” and “Cruel to Be Kind”. Any pop songs that mention Twelfth Night’s Malvolio are instantly a hit with me. On principle. And this song’s got a great hook. ^_^

Here Are the Lyrics )

Went to Borders, where we had a great deal of fun giggling over a Palm Reading book, as well as how right and how wrong it was. ^_^ Then went to another bookstore. I went for the Star Wars graphic novels. The scene I love the most is a night scene over Coruscant, and involves Obi-Wan and Anakin. But only their voices. You don’t see them at all. The dialogue is as follows:

Anakin: “Master, there’s something I must tell you...”

Obi-Wan: “What?”

Anakin: “It was after I stepped out of the refresher window on to the ledge…”

Obi-Wan: “What?!

That Obi-Wan reaction is priceless.

*beams* [14 Aug 2003|01:16am]

Interview Meme! ^_^ For [info]raina_at!

1) What fandoms do you read and/or write?

I seem to be only capable of handling one fandom at a time, and for now, it's TPM. Also I have the distressing habit of contracting happy fits when I read great fic. One such can make me happy for days, during which I tend to not read fic due to great happiness. (Yes, strange.)

Other current fandoms - Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I was once deeply into the X-Files. I would read Spider-Man fic, but very few write Norman Osborn/Peter Parker. I also didn't just say that. I have the strange habit of reading only slash. Or humor.

I was also into several anime fandoms, Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X, X/1999, Yami no Matsuei, Flame of Recca, Utena, and Evangelion among them. Anime access is unfortunately limited to what I see on cable and what I can get my hands on, thus the limited scope of what I like. I like Wolf's Rain, too. Getbackers isn't bad either. I like Akabane/Ginji, but it seems like 90% of the fandom is Ban/Ginji.

2) What did you think of the last book in the "Sword of Truth" series?

There's a new one out now - "Naked Empire". I'm getting that one soon, so I haven't read it yet ^_^

Though if you mean "Pillars of Creation" - I opened that book, found that it was not about Richard, and, moreover, seemed to be in the perspective of someone who spoke like Adie, and was... discouraged. I will gleefully buy "Naked Empire" because I get Richard back. (I know this is the wrong way to go about this.)

My favourite book is still Wizard's First Rule.

3) Harry Potter: what ship and why?

*goes and hides*

Severus/Harry.

A friend once suggested that I possess a master/student kink.

Why? I'm not quite sure, myself. I used to be into Harry/Draco, but it was nowhere near the way I'm into Snape/Harry. I like Harry, and I like Snape. I adore Alan Rickman. I suppose I simply read a fic I loved, and fell into the pairing.

Because I wanted to put up SS/HP quizzes. )

4) Which one of the Star Wars episodes is your all-time favourite and why?

The Phantom Menace, for Qui and Obi.

This is going to sound like heresy, but I can't see the slash in the movie. Not from lack of trying.

*deep shame*

5) Have you read "At Swim, Two Boys"? If not, can I pimp it to you?

Not yet - Though I know in early April, quite a few of the HP slashers were reading it, and loving it. I saw some excerpts on [info]lauramcewan's LJ, and I thought the prose style might take a little getting used to.

And in answer to the second question, sure! Why not?

Most Stunning Discovery of The Day. [14 Aug 2003|12:48am]
[ mood | contemplative ]

Said Stunning Discovery:

Moulin Rouge = La Traviata.

I was reading a book on Verdi today and read the synopsis of La Traviata. Was utterly stunned. Said Verdi book is one of those books I never seem to have room on my card to borrow, but am utterly fascinated by. I blame it on studying the Unification of Italy. Always found it one of the most romantic *cough* topics in the syllabus. Studying it was anything but romantic, seeing as how the Italians people of the Italian Peninsula (as my teacher would take great pains to correct us, there was no "Italy" as of then) had three wars as the final aspect of unification, but:

Shall quote from the book:

"La Traviata means "one who has gone astray", a very nice expression for a "fallen" woman.

Much of Traviata's popularity is due to the heroine. The tragic, beautiful, noble, young and doomed woman has also become a figure in popular iconography.

For example, in Act III, a great ensemble is built around the moment when Alfredo, as the hero is called, insults Violetta publicly by flinging money at her, saying that she is now repaid"

Also it is rather important to know that Violetta suffers from consumption.

"Life is only pleasure, she (Violetta) suggests. Only when one can no longer love, answers Alfredo. She warns him not to speak of love to one who does not know it. "Such is my destiny," he retorts."

And then...

Alfredo's father appears on the scene. His daughter, Alfredo's sister, is to be married soon. But her fiance refuses to marry her as long as Alfredo is tied to this fallen woman. So... for the good of Alfredo's sister, Violetta is persuaded to end it with Alfredo.

"Violetta asks what she must do. Tell him you don't love him. Alfredo wouldn't believe that. Leave him. Alfredo would follow. Then..."

Then she goes off with none other than The Baron.

And the lovers are reconciled just before Violetta dies.

Last Saturday, some friends and I ordered pizza and planned to watch Moulin Rouge for the night. I went to get the pizza, and the delivery man's name was Ewan. Of all names.

Someone Up There must be trying to tell me something.

And coincidentally, "Black Hawk Down" was on cable that night.

And Because I was So Amused. [14 Aug 2003|12:34am]
[ music | There is no mood that states "Insane". I wonder why. ]

I was reading Newsweek, and in the Periscope section I came across this article.

I will gleefully bold my favourite section of this article.

Parliament recently passed the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief) Regulations Act of 2003 to protect Britons from religious discrimination in the workplace, guaranteeing every employee a religious holiday. As of December, the country’s faithful will be allowed to celebrate the festival of their choice without fear of getting fired.

The law defines religion as “any religion, religious belief or similar philosophical belief” that fits such criteria as having “collective worship.”

That means the 390,000 Britons who listed “Jedi Knight” as their religion in the 2001 Census might legally claim the release of the next “Star Wars” DVD as a religious holiday.

The law may also cause confusion for bosses unfamiliar with obscure beliefs, like the guy in the mailroom who claims he’s a Druid and takes off to Stonehenge every summer solstice.

Employers have a strong incentive to grant requests; should bosses be unrelenting, employees will be able to proceed to an employment tribunal to receive damages. Of course, the law asks for employees to be reasonable about their claims. But try telling that to a grown man dressed like Boba Fett.

Oh. And just because:

Obi-Stitch Kenobi. I think. )

Speaking of which, I distinctly remember an ancient Garfield cartoon that had Arlene (Garfield's Vigorously Denied Other Half) as Leia, and... a conversation that went this way.

Arlene/Leia: "This is Odie-Wan Kenobi! He has the Force to help us!"

Garfield: *cynical expression* He hides it well.

I seem to find that Falling Into Fandom makes me unusually sensitive to anything even vaguely Fandom-related. Someone in my house is reading Tony Parson's "Man and Wife" (the sequel to "Man and Boy"), and I noticed the cover has a Darth Vader figurine being married off. To one of those top-of-the-wedding-cake-tier couples. The bride looked perfectly normal. The groom did not.

I was in Borders on Monday night, and was so absorbed in reading a Star Wars magazine that I walked into a knee-high stack of books. And burst out laughing because I'd never done anything as silly as that for a a very long time.

Something Else... [14 Aug 2003|12:26am]
[ mood | weird ]

Watched the second installment of Tomb Raider recently. Lara has a butler and the requisite Computer Whiz installed in her house. At the end of the movie, when

Cut for Tomb Raider Spoilers )

I liked Finding Nemo. But I can't seem to watch it without having even stranger thoughts.

Oh, and also, I have decided that I Must Not Say Things In Front of Children

Was at extended family dinner with five year old cousin.

He heard me when I said "male bonding".

And asked what it meant.

Had not an innocent thought in my head, and therefore thought it prudent not to reply.

Soon he became distracted, which was a relief.

Also must remember not to mention the word "gay" in front of younger relatives. Legolas Fancier (She was nine then) asked her mother what it meant, and it was my fault. *hides face*

Her mom said, “Men who love men.”

And Legolas Fancier said, “Oh.”

In the “Is that all it is?” tone.

I wish I was like her mom.

:: weeps ::

Legolas Fancier and Family stopped by the other day – They were on their way back from the supermarket on an emergency shopping mission.

Legolas Fancier told me about Jedi Cheese.

^________________________________^

Turns out one of their family members has an issue with the way "Cheddar Cheese" is pronounced. Therefore we have Jedi Cheese.

We also have Jerry Cheese, but I know which one I found more fascinating.

Sibling decided at that moment to invent an Obi-Wan Kenobi Jedi Cheese Ad.

And perform it.

In front of the house.

Complete with lightsaber action.

It was at night. (Which was a relief)

Same sibling who, on one of our jogging trips (I say this in the loosest possible sense, for "our" jogging trips involve him far, far ahead, and me several leagues behind, so it’s quite inaccurate to use that particular possessive pronoun [if I got that term right]) began to sing a version of Weird Al Yankovic’s "The Saga Begins" [That’s his The Phantom Menace version of American Pie] with disturbingly altered lyrics. Where Weird Al sings, "I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn", my sibling begun, "Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn", and continued in such a manner that made me fear that he reads my mind.

He's too young to read my mind!

Oh, and Weird Al Yankovic's “The Saga Begins” video is hilarious. Begins with Weird Al as Obi-Wan. I don't know if this is undiscriminating Obi-Wan Adoration, but I thought, "I had no idea Weird Al was cute." Pans to a piano-playing Sith, and ends with a screenful of Obi-Wan Kenobis. (That is, Weird Al in a Padawan getup. Complete with braid.)

Am Still Amused. [14 Aug 2003|12:20am]
[ mood | crazy ]
[ music | Davey Brothers, "Heart Go Faster" ]

I adore McTabby’s Summary Executions.

Harry Potter fanfic summaries.

Really hilarious ones.

I laughed until I cried.

This was my absolute favourite:

Severus Snape finally meets his match when the witch of his darkest dreams tears his pants to shreads.

Spelling is an accurate reproduction.

Other people I have forcibly subjected to this others have suggested "plans" and someone else suggested "past" for "pants", but I think it works if it's an NC-17 fic.

And there's More

“She learned alot about the highnotes, and the let downs of life. But when she finds her biological father in last place anyone would expect, she'll have to learn the hard way, that you can't fight the moonlight.”

Somehow I think this is Lupin-related.

“She's witty, pretty and can surely get down to the nitty gritty.”

*sings* “I feel pretty, I feel pretty, I feel pretty and witty and...”*

“You never knew it, but Charles Townsend is a squib and his cousin is the world famous whizard Albus Dumbledore. Albus has his own organization and his own Angels. Their names: Ginny, Luna and Hermione.”

And that's all that can be said about that ^_^

Speaking of Snape - [info]altricial was right. this entry has an endless capacity to amuse. Me, at least.

Title: Your Winter
Written for [info]tpm100, posted under [info]aefallen

(Drabble can also be used for previous songfic challenge: Sister Hazel's "Your Winter".)

Characters: Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan.

“Look, Master! It’s snowing!”

You are thrilled.

So I join you outside, where you are standing with your eyes alight, amidst a thousand snowflakes falling from the skies.

Here, you are the center of this universe, the living spark at the heart of a world asleep.

As you see me and run towards me, braid flying – your eyes remind me of his.

But when you finally reach me and smile, Xanatos fades away.

I feel his memory winging its way across this silent world, forgotten as the snow that fell the night before, vanishing under the sunlight that is your laughter.

In your eyes is all the blue that this winter sky has forgotten, and your smile speaks to me of a world without winter.

And somehow, this is right.

For it was your love that led me out of the winter of my heart.
